My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday
Takahiro Miki
An emotional review of My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday (2016). Watching via Zoom date with my crush, the reversed timeline fate of Takatoshi & Emi, and the gut-wrenching song 'Happy End' by Back Number.
“My first day with you is your last day with me. A story of overwhelming mutual effort.”
I watched this movie over a Zoom date with my crush—the very same person who seems to be the main recurring character whenever I write about romance on this blog haha. And honestly, this movie is absolutely wild and left a heavy lump in my throat!

Reversed Timelines & Matching Each Other’s Effort
My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday (Boku wa Ashita, Kinou no Kimi to Date Suru) was directed by Takahiro Miki and stars Sota Fukushi as Takatoshi Minamiyama alongside Nana Komatsu as Emi Fukuju. The premise is brilliantly unique and tragic: Takatoshi and Emi exist in parallel worlds where time flows in opposite directions. They can only meet for 30 days every 5 years—when they are both exactly 20 years old.
- For Takatoshi: Day 1 is when he first musters up the courage to say hi and ask for Emi’s name at Takaragaike Station in Kyoto.
- For Emi: Takatoshi’s Day 1 is actually her Day 30—the final day of their time together in that cycle.
Just imagine… while Takatoshi is experiencing the blissful nervous start of a new romance, Emi is quietly living out her last day with the man she deeply loves—knowing that tomorrow, he will look at her as a complete stranger he has never met. That’s why when Takatoshi asks her out on Day 1, Emi suddenly bursts into tears.

What blew me away most about this film was the concept of effort. The girl (Emi) makes an extraordinary effort, recording every single memory and event in her diary so that their shared timeline stays consistent from Takatoshi’s perspective.
And when the guy (Takatoshi) finds her diary on Day 15 and finally realizes this painful reality… instead of giving up or growing bitter at fate, he chooses to match Emi’s effort without hesitation. He fights to make her happy through the remaining days they have left.
Watching them balance that effort together over Zoom with my crush… honestly, it was painfully beautiful and made me reflect on what it truly means to show up for someone.
Falling Under the Spell of Back Number - “Happy End”
This movie also served as my gateway into the Japanese rock band Back Number. And honestly… THEY ARE DEVILISHLY BRUTAL! 😭
Their songs rip straight through your heart, as if specifically designed to wreck your emotional state haha. Especially the main theme song, Happy End (ハッピーエンド).

The lyrics tell the story of someone putting on a brave smile and waving goodbye saying “I’m fine”, even as their inner heart screams not to be let go. As the ending credits roll to Happy End, tears just flow naturally.
Final Reflection
My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday is far more than a high-concept sci-fi romance. It’s a poignant reminder of how precious every single second is when spent with someone you care about, even when time or distance feels stacked against you.
If you haven’t seen it yet, this is a 10/10 must-watch… especially if you get to watch it over a shared screen with someone special!
