Project Hail Mary
Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
A deep-dive review of Project Hail Mary (2026). My initial 'AMAZE AMAZE AMAZEE' reaction, Eva Stratt's emotional Sign of the Times karaoke scene, the adorable bond with Rocky the alien, and Ryland Grace's epic mission.
“AMAZE AMAZE AMAZEE! An ordinary middle-school science teacher journeying across stars to save Earth.”
Honestly, when the credits rolled on this movie, there was only one phrase that immediately burst out of my mouth:
“AMAZE AMAZE AMAZEE!” 🚀✨
If you’ve read Andy Weir’s masterpiece novel or watched this 2026 film adaptation directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, you’ll completely understand my excitement. “Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!” isn’t just my initial reaction—it’s the most iconic, heartwarming line from Rocky, the five-legged Eridian alien made of xenonite who communicates through musical chords!

As someone who holds a massive soft spot for space exploration films, Project Hail Mary fulfilled all my wildest sci-fi dreams and cosmic curiosities.
Eva Stratt’s Karaoke Scene: “Sign of the Times” Goosebumps
One of the most emotionally charged and chill-inducing moments of the entire film is the farewell scene before the mission launches. In this sequence, the character Eva Stratt (brilliantly portrayed by Sandra Hüller) sings Harry Styles’ Sign of the Times during a casual karaoke farewell gathering with her team.
Doing a bit of research online, I discovered that this scene wasn’t even in the original script! Sandra Hüller herself pitched the idea of finding a fitting farewell song, and the directors immediately embraced it. The result? ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWING!

The lyrics—“Just stop your crying, it’s the sign of the times / Welcome to the final show / Hope you’re wearing your best clothes…”—blend seamlessly with humanity’s impending extinction from the Astrophage microorganism. It captures sadness, resignation, and monumental human courage all at once.

When this scene played, I literally paused, rewound a few seconds, and watched it again. No shame at all haha, the vibes were just that special!
Meeting Rocky: The Cutest First Contact Ever!
The moment Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) first encounters Rocky in the Tau Ceti star system is another absolute highlight.

Rocky uses his species’ xenonite technology to construct a humanoid figure so Grace wouldn’t panic. And as they slowly build a shared language—Grace using his computer and musical notes—this cross-species friendship feels so genuinely wholesome and warm amidst the cold void of deep space.
Every time Rocky gets excited and chirps “Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!”, I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear in front of my screen haha.
An Ordinary Science Teacher Finding Himself
What makes Project Hail Mary so touching is Ryland Grace’s character development. He starts off as an amnesiac middle-school science teacher waking up from a coma aboard the Hail Mary ship. With his two astronaut crewmates dead, he realizes he is Earth’s sole survivor bearing the fate of billions of lives.

In the quiet void of space, Grace isn’t just solving scientific puzzles. He is rediscovering who he is—evolving from a reluctant participant forced onto a mission into someone willing to sacrifice everything for his friend and for humanity.

Final Reflection
Project Hail Mary is easily one of the best sci-fi movies I’ve watched in recent years. The combination of precise science, witty humor, a heartwarming interspecies friendship between Grace and Rocky, and the spine-tingling Sign of the Times karaoke scene… everything comes together brilliantly.
If you love intelligent, soulful space exploration stories, this is a 10/10 absolute must-watch! Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! 🚀✨
